Superb Antique French Victorian Bronzed Cast Metal Statue of ATHENA C. 1870-1910

From a private collection estate sale we are pleased to present this superb antique French Victorian era bronze patinated cast metal Classical statue of ATHENA. Un-Signed. C1870-1910

A fine statue of wonderful artistic presentation depicting ATHENA in full body armor with a spear held in her hand – shield with the head of Medusa on her arm. Great aged patina with some green verdigris.

In a late mythology, Medusa, unlike her sister Gorgons, came to be viewed by the Greeks of the 5th century as a beautiful mortal that served as priestess in Athena's temple. Poseidon liked Medusa, and decided to rape her in the temple of Athena, refusing to allow her vow of chastity to stand in his way. Upon discovering the desecration of her temple, Athena changed Medusa's form to match that of her sister Gorgons as punishment. Medusa's hair turned into snakes, her lower body was transformed also, and meeting her gaze would turn any living man to stone.

In Greek mythology, as you know, the warrior Perseus – aided by Athena – kills Medusa by cutting her head off. Athena's shield bears the head of Medusa – a gift from Perseus.

It is almost impossible anymore to find Victorian era statues of such fine artistic presentation and casting – much less statues of Athena. This is a great collector heirloom that is sure to please.

From the top of her helmet to the bottom of her sandals – this is one of the finest executed Athena Statues we have come across. This great heirloom piece is in very nice condition...................

This wonderful rare 19th Century statue would look great regardless of where you choose to display her. She would look great on a desk, table, shelf, dresser, vanity or especially a display cabinet. She would look exquisite in any Edwardian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Classical or Greek themed décor and will make a great addition to any bronze, statue or Goddess Collection. But, you better hurry as this will not last long!

Height: 10 inches Base Diameter: 4 inches Condition: Fine - No Damage - Only normal wear, scuffing, rubbing and soiling from use commensurable with age.............original felt to bottom....................spear is loose (separate piece – looks like someone tried to glue it to her hand at some point with small dab of glue – not a concern and an easy fix if the buyer wishes to glue it again – otherwise it is fine – Only mentioned for accuracy and full disclosure).
