If you are already familiar with "Parian" then you know In the mid-nineteenth century, the "Parian phenomenon" was credited with imbuing the nude with commercial appeal, which was quite a feat in the straitlaced world of the Victorians. The highly vitrified figures were called Parian because they bore an uncanny resemblance to the pristine white marble quarried from the island of Paros in antiquity. The picturesque nudes represented in Parian resonated with the Victorian middle class' admiration for ancient Greek sculpture, which deified the human form, and with their fascination with the provocative heathen gods of old. The Great Exhibition of 1851 launched Parian into the world. The period of roughly 1860 – 1890 was a strong period for Parian art. Minton, Copeland, Worcester, Wedgwood, Coalport, Robinson & Leadbeater, Bates Brown-Westhead Moore & Co, Ridgeway and others were making Parian in the 1850s. Not all pieces - as is the case here - were signed.
