A exceedingly rare and exquisite antique Art Nouveau cold painted bronzed plaster & gesso bust of "BOHEMIENNE" by Emmanual Villanis (1858-1920). Signed "E. Villanis" to right front shoulder area. C. 1880-1900

A rare opportunity to own this highly sought after collectors bust by Emmanuel Villanis. This is of course, Villanis' BOHEMIENNE, depicting the Spanish Gypsy in the French opera "Carmen" set in Seville, and referred to as a "bohémienne" in Meilhac and Halévy's libretto (1875). BOHEMIENNE displays her unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic, or literary pursuits. Bohemians were and still are wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds - not unlike what we know as Gypsy bands. The use of the word bohemian first appeared in the English language in the nineteenth century[1] to describe the non-traditional lifestyles of marginalized and impoverished artists, writers, journalists, musicians, and actors in major European cities and were very recognized as well as popular during the Art Nouveau period.

This large Villanis bust is in Exquisite condition and carries all of the hallmarks you expect from one of his art pieces: fine detail - deep sculpting - hallowed eyes and Title Name to base front. In addition, this rare bust carries Villanis' signature to her right shoulder area. As nice as any bronze bust Villanis produced. These rare fine plaster busts have always been far more colorful and visual than their metal counterparts and have become increasingly more sought after in the collector venues. You will not find another example of Villanis' BOHEMIENNE any better than this one!

She would display nicely and demand attention in any Victorian, Art Nouveau, French, Bohemian, European or even Gypsy style decor. Of course, she would anchor any Villanis collection as well. Do not miss this one - she will not last long!
