A very nice rare large French Art Nouveau patinated cast metal bust of "MEDEE" by P. Rigual. "Par Rigual 1898" to front bronze title plate. C. 1898
Of course, this is based on Médée - In Greek mythology , Medea (in ancient Greek) the daughter of Aeetes , king of Colchis . She is a sorceress, like her aunt Circe and is in love with Jason. From this mythological story the tragédie mise en musique in five acts and a prologue by Marc-Antoine Charpentier and later changed to a French libretto by Thomas Corneille came to rise. It was premiered in Paris on December 4, 1693. Médée is the only opera Charpentier wrote for the Académie Royale de Musique. The opera was well reviewed by contemporary critics and commentators, including Sébastien de Brossard and Évrard Titon du Tillet, as well as Louis XIV whose brother attended several performances, as did his son. Medee was a popular female character during the Art Nouveau period as the lead character who conjures up spirits of beautiful women who seduce the guards, uses her magic powers to drive the king insane, kills her rival Créuse and in the final act stabs her children who were taken from her.
A great authentic Art Nouveau Period bust of MEDEE by the well known and documented Spanish Sculptor P. Rigual. Fine details - deep sculpting and presentation - down to the fateful dagger. Exactly what you expect from a Rigual art piece. Wonderful time worn silvery toned patina with traces of long worn gold gild.
This is a great bust with great detail and highlights. This heirloom art piece would display well regardless of where you choose to locate her and will command a presence. Would look stunning in any Edwardian, Victorian or Art Nouveau decor. Of course she would anchor any P Rigual collection.
