Zuni Native American Mike Simplicio Stone Inlaid Horse Turquoise Bolo Tie
According to the great reference book, Zuni – THE ART & THE PEOPLE published in 1975, page 60, the authors Ed & Barbara Bell stated that the Simplicios are the creators and have been making this unique design since 1960. In fact, photographed in their book is a similar bolo to this one.
The horse is made of highly reflective mother of pearl and that is inset into jet and has a sterling silver detailing on the halter. The inlay is perfect, with no gaps and flush, so it feels smooth with no pits or edges when rubbed with the fingers--amazing stone on stone inlay. Below are two nice pieces of Turquoise, the Simplicios usually used Villa Grove turquoise and this looks to be that, hand set with a dog tooth bezel setting onto the silver bolo. The bolo has beautifully stamped raindrops in the design used by Dan Simplicio and strong stamped vertical framing, a signature accent of Dan Simplicio's work. The stamping is deep and it's gorgeous. You can see from the back that this was done on entirely hand hammered ingot silver. Every aspect is hand made, with the stones cut and polished, shaped to perfectly fit. This piece is a prize older piece and it's made by the masters of Zuni art.
This bolo is 1 5/8"" tall and 1" wide, and the lariat tie is 34" end to end including the sterling tips. There is a very small ding in one of the tips. We leave it as found in unpolished condition. The leather lariat is soft and pliable and in great condition.
This is a well known piece by a famous family of silversmiths and what a pleasure to wear! Take a look around the internet and you will see these are often listed at over $400 on Native American sites so don't miss a bargain!
