Carved Marble Motif Rooster Planter

This very finely carved pc. probably dates from the last half of the 19th century. It measures 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" on the oval base. I can only reason that it's intended purpose would be to hold a plant or some very exotic flowering species. We had a miniature orchid in the well which fit and showed very well although it quit blooming prior to us doing the photos. There is a 2 1/2" ancient slice on the base which is missing but not evident from the top. Overall, it is a very attractive item and exhibits intense craftmanship of the carver's art.
