Vintage Sterling Cameo Bowl - 800 Silver
I believe this piece is from the late 1800's, early 1900s based on the design of the bowl and hallmarks. The silver content is 800. Gram weight is 92.1 grams of 800 sterling.
I believe the relief cameo is Mozart. I am not positive on this but it appears to be Mozart. The cameo is very expertly done in beautiful detail. There is great detail in the body of the bowl with beautiful cut-out work in columns of tulip like flowers. Enhancing the portrait cartouche are swags and ribbons. On each side is an acanthus design.
There are 4 different stamps along with 800 on the bottom of the bowl. I can decipher 2, a crescent moon and a crown. Unfortunately, I cannot make out the other two stamps. I have tried to research this design but could not find another example. I can only believe that this piece is rare.
Measurements are as follows - 5-1/8 inches long by 3 inches wide, 2-1/2 inches deep measuring on the higher sloped end and 1-3/8 inches deep measuring from bottom to top near cameo, 3-1/8 inches long by 2-1/8 inches wide measuring the sitting bottom area. The cameo measures about 1 inch high by 3/4 inch wide.
The design is symmetrical with all detail featured on both sides. Condition is good with a couple of minor issues. First, there is a very tiny slight approximate 2mm size indentation on the bottom near one of the cameos. This imperfection is unnoticeable unless you turn the piece over. The other condition issue is tarnish marks that I did not want to try very hard to get out. I gave this piece a light buffing but did not want to use too many harsh chemicals or elbow grease. This is an old piece with lovely patina that I did not want to ruin. If the tarnish marks bother you, I would suggest taking it to a high end jeweler who could administer a professional polishing for little cost.
