English Silver Ladle with Inset Coin

A fascinating piece of silversmithing, this punch or toddy ladle was fashioned from two silver coins. A 1739 silver shilling is set in the bottom, and another silver coin was hammered out to form the bowl, some lettering of which remains legible at the rim.

The shilling in the base bears the bust of George II, English monarch from 1727-1760. Although essentially a German, he ruled Britain at a time of increasing prosperity and expansion, and gained the distinction of being the last English king to lead his troops into a battle, which he won. Fans of classical music will also note that Handel's four coronation anthems were commissioned for the coronation of George II and Queen Caroline on October 11, 1727.

Punches and toddies were popular party drinks in the 18th and 19th centuries, and there existed an array of bowls, cups, strainers, ladles, and other paraphernalia to prepare and serve them. These coin-set ladles were mounted with long, slender handles of turned ivory, ebony, or rosewood, or of twisted baleen (whalebone). This example has lost its handle but the stem mount is undamaged and could easily be refitted with a new one.

According to most references, the coins used in these pieces almost always predate the actual making of the ladles, which concurs with our assessment that the decoration and monogram appear mid-19th century. The ornamentation consists of encircling swags, bows, and pleats of ribbon augmented with floral sprays, all worked in repousse´ and chasing.

There are no maker's marks as is usual with these pieces, which though not rare, are less commonly found than silver handled ladles of the same period. A very pretty and interesting item worthy of restoration.

Dimensions: Bowl is 2.5" in diameter, approx. 1" deep. Width including stem mount is 4.5". Total weight is 36.4 grams.

Marks: None other than the coin markings.

Condition: Some wear to the coin (see photos 1,2,3 & 7) and a network of minute scratches overall, consistent with age, use, and polishing. Stem fitting secure to the bowl and has only a 1/16" split at the socket end (see photos 4 & 8).
