This superb large Victorian cross is made of sterling silver (unmarked but tested). It dates to the English aesthetic period circa 1870. There are no marks.
The cross measures 3 and 5/8" (9.4cms) long, including the tiny ring, by 2 and 5/16" (5.9cms) long. It is of hollow construction and weighs 24.3 grams.
On the front of the cross is an exquisite engraving of birds and foliage. There are five birds either flying or sitting on branches. Around them are three little butterflies. At the base is a stork wading in water.
At the top of the cross is a small but sturdy ring. Attached to it is a larger bail to hang on a chain or hook. The back is plain apart from an engraved outline.
This very beautiful cross is in excellent antique condition and will arrive in a gift box.
