Belleek Ribbon Pattern Porcelain Creamer Mint
There are two backstamp marks on the bottom. The upper mark depicts a Fourth Period (1st Green) mark which has an Irish wolfhound, round tower, and harp, with the word Belleek. A banner identifies County Fermanagh, Ireland and is edged with sprigs of shamrocks. This green mark is identical to its black predecessor mark but was changed because it was believed green was less obtrusive than black at showing through translucent china. This mark in green was used from 1946 to 1955. Below the upper mark is the trade registry mark with a Celtic decoration including Gaelic words `deanta in eireann' (made in Ireland) and the number 0857. This trade registry mark dates from 1884 but was not added to pottery as a mark until 1926.
PRODUCT INFORMATION – Belleek Pottery Limited is a porcelain company that began producing world famous porcelain as early as 1872 in Belleek, Ireland, County Fermanagh. Today, this has become Northern Ireland. Belleek produces porcelain that is characterized by its thinness, slightly iridescent surface using the frit process. A fire destroyed the Company's records in 1930 including pattern history. As with most businesses, WWII was a very difficult time for Belleek, with trade routes halted and most of its employees left to join the war effort. Very few craftsmen were left to produce even small quantities of pottery. After the war in 1946 full production resumed and Belleek experienced three decades of increased production and success. Today, Belleek Pottery Limited continues to produce fine art in the same building located in Belleek, Northern Ireland. Since 1862 all Belleek china includes their first graphic mark. Over the years, additional graphic symbols have been added. The original mark depicts an Irish Wolfhound with its head turned backwards to face a round tower. This is believed by many to be the Devenish Round Tower on Devenish Island in Lower Lough Erne. An Irish Harp appears to the right of the tower.
