Published by the Piccadilly Fountain Press in 1931, the purpose of this book is described in the author's own words :
"It is the purpose of these chapters to gather all that can be gleaned from the surrounding circumstances of the events connected with the years immediately previous to Dickens's entrance into the literary world, as well a the influence of certain people, in order to throw some light on the working of his ind, and the effect of these persons and events on his life and writings."
To see photos like that of Mrs Winter, formerly Maria Beadnell, the 'Dora' of 'David Copperfield' in later life might take some of the gloss off the books themselves. However, speaking personally, 'later life' photos rarely show a continuation of the charms of youth, so we must be generous. The book also has chapters covering, for example, the presumed originals of Little Nell and Agnes.
