The back panel of this handsome chair, which may be for use by a musician, seamstress, tailor or at a vanity, is made of rather hard to find, sold by the inch, curly eyed maple. The rest of the beautiful wood is hard rock maple. The chair is 29 1/4" tall, 15" wide and 16" deep and is very solid and sturdy in construction. I use the word 'handsome' because it stresses poise and dignity of form and proportion which fits very well as a descriptor for this piece. It is a chair that works well in spaces that are too small for larger chairs, but where you want a full comfortable seat provided. I have not been able to identify the maker or other information from the fragments of label and the numbers left on the underside. I continue to ask knowledgeable parties if they recognize the label. I have speculated for what specific purpose this chair was made and have come up with a few. Maybe a vanity chair, sewing chair or musicians chair? Beyond the already stated solid sturdy construction of the chair, it's aesthetic condition is as viewed in the pictures provided. The defects, cracks, seen on the underside of the seat do not go through to the top of the seat. The chip on the back bottom of one leg is 3/4" X 1/8" and the hairline cracks coming out of the center seam are 1" and 1/2" long. None of these affect the stability or sturdiness of the chair and, as I do, many would view these as attractive character marks that come with age. Each will decide for themselves. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like more pictures or if you have questions.
