Mordechai Levanon Watercolor on Paper Landscape Israeli Artist 1972
Mordechai Levanon, 1901-1968
Levanon was born in Transylvania, Romania in 1901. Immigrated to Israel in 1921 and studied at the Bezalel Art Academy and painting with Yitzhak Frenkel. Levanon is largely considered as one of the founding fathers of Israeli art. He was enchanted by Eretz Israel's illuminating light and its play of colors, which remain a remarkable sign of his works. Some seed Levanon as "the Israeli Van Gogh"; he was a magnificent landscape painter, who used to paint the holy cities of Jerusalem and Sfad most frequently. Levanon held his first one-man exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1937, and from that year on, he took part in almost every annual collective exhibition of Israeli artists.
