Original Lithograph by Buell Whitehead (1919-1993)

For your consideration, an original lithograph by Buell Whitehead (1919-1993) entitled "Storm Tide". This extraordinarily stylized work was created by a American painter whose work is becoming increasingly collectible as Whiteheads modernist aesthetic becomes known to collectors. As a painter, Whitehead can be placed in a category somewhere between a creator of folk outsider art and the art of a traditionally schooled painter. His canvas's reflect the modernist aesthetics and compositional treatment of early 20th century art (Dove, Marin, O'Keeffe, et al), yet retain a feeling of naiveté and individualism in his paintings; in which the subject matter most often centers on swamp scenes and other Southern locales. The painting offered is a prime and early example of these themes and is noteworthy for the anthropomorphic and humanized stylization of the trees and other subject matte that are the central subject of the painting. Whitehead's paintings depict subject matter in which visual elements are twisted, distorted, and bordering on the surrealistic. The painting is in excellent condition and is signed in the artist's hand and identified and titled on reverse, and in its original period frame.

Buell Whitehead, bio (internet): "Growing up in Ft. Myers, Buell developed a love for the great outdoors, hunting in the Everglades and fishing among the many islands of Florida's southwest coast, prominent themes in his art work. He graduated from Ft. Myers high school in 1937 and began attending the University of Florida in 1938. Majoring in art, he worked toward a Bachelors of Art degree, where he studied the complexities of lithography. His education was interrupted with the beginning of WWII. He served in the military from 1942-1944. Using the GI bill he finished college and graduated from the University with honors in 1945. Shortly after receiving his degree, Buell moved to California to attend the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. At Otis he continued his research, refining his art while mastering the technological expertise of stone lithography under the G.I. Bill. At Otis, he learned printmaking and started mastering the ancient art of stone lithography in black and white and color. His works were also starting to decorate the walls of movie sets in the Golden Era of Hollywood.
