Born in Keytesville Landing, Missouri, Helen Grant was a painter who settled in Emporia, Virginia. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in Paris. In 1905, she exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. This oil on canvas still life is most probably from the 1920's and measures 22" x 22". The painting displays a high level of draftsmanship and paint handling and has a strong, yet muted, presence. The canvas is in fair condition with damage to the canvas's bottom portion and fraying of the canvas at the corners, but with no paint loss or damage to the painting central portion. The artist's signature is present, but is worn and faded and hard to read. Due to its condition, I am pricing it accordingly.
