1910s-1920s Rustic Handmade Mexican Folk Art Pottery Piggy Bank w/Coins
This little handmade (Tonala?) late 1910s-early 1920s Mexican pottery folk art child's piggy bank is just adorable! Its construction is very rustic, and it features a ring handle, a cute little tail, 2 floppy ears, a snout, and just the impression of legs and feet. Once this piece had diagonal stripes in what looks like browns/tans, and once it had a protective shellac coat. Now the stripes have faded to almost nothing, and the yellowed shellac is missing in many spots. It appears to never have had a painted face. There is a cartouche on the pig's right side, but the it's impossible to read. This bank also contains a secret; there are (as best I can tell) 5 coins in it. They look like pennies, but who knows? This bank has no plugged hole to retrieve them, so you'd have to break it to find out. Part of the fun of this little piggy is the mystery!

Unsure of maker.
Has damage; The paint has faded, and the shellac has flaked in may places. One ear tip is broken off, as is the end of the pig's tail, and there's a gouge behind the broken ear. In rough shape, but that only adds to the charm, in my opinion!
4" long x 2 3/8" wide x 4" tall.
