Charming & Hard-To-Find Handpainted Staffordshire Cottage Ware Butter/Cheese Keeper
This is so charming! 1950s Staffordshire pottery Cottage Ware butter (or cheese) keeper features a hand painted thatched English cottage motif. There is a rectangular underplate with decorative points on the ends (the yard), with a large lid sitting on top (the cottage), with a hole in the chimney for ventilation. The underplate has sponge painted edges. This is a piece of tableware you don't see often, as Staffordshire pottery pieces are fragile, and the utilitarian ware didn't often survive. This was clearly an every day piece; while there is little damage in the way of chips, there is some crazing and staining. In my opinion, these flaws don't detract from the beauty of the piece, but rather add to it...almost like it's earned its imperfections over the last 60+ years of service. The bottom reads: Made in England. A wonderful piece of Staffordshire pottery!
