Fabulous Quality Museum Grade Shell Cameo of Zeus in 18K Gold Mount

This is a fabulous Victorian carved shell cameo depicting Zeus, King of the Greek Gods. Italian cameo, circa 1850. The large and detailed carving shows a traditional profile of the god with fine facial features, ornate hair and beard. The cameo is set in a hefty good quality, plain, 18K gold mount with a rope twist border and pin fastener on the reverse. Original c&t clasp. The mount is not marked, but it tests as 18K gold with acid. The cameo is presented in its original, dark green, antique fitted box, which is in good condition. The brooch is in excellent condition, having been locked up in a drawer for many years. There are some internal stress marks, two of which are more visible from the front to the right of Zeus' forehead. They are not cracks and are perfectly smooth. The brooch measures approximately 2 1/2" in width and 2 7/8" in length. The box is approximately 3 3/4" in diameter. This is a truly stunning interpretation of a popular theme.
