Here is a very beautiful approximately eighteen (18") inches tall antique circa 1870s uncommon variation of the German Dolley (Dolly) Madison hair style china head doll with her original antique body and original antique clothing. She is as-found, an estate find. She has a well defined shoulder head with short and dramatic all over curls and a molded center bow with ribbon ends in her hair above the front brow, painted black with her black hair, as the majority of such dolls are painted. Each of her beautifully painted blue eyes has an accent circle to the lower right of the pupil as well as a black outline three quarters of the way around the iris. There is a painted black lid line above each eye. She has coral-red lines painted over the eyes, matching eye dots and matching "open" oval nostril accents for her nose. Her lips are closed, painted in coral-red with squared off ends and a darker garnet line that separates them. The decoration of the doll head features points to Kestner as the manufacturer. She has her original leather arms/hands and original made on leather boots.
Her original clothing consists of a white cotton chemise with broderie anglaise whitework, two marvelous broderie anglaise whitework petticoats, broderie anglaise whitework pantaloons, and her bright garnet red silk skirt that is shattering with great age, trimmed at the hem with antique black lace and with an added antique cream lace on net over-skirt/overlay and her original deep garnet/aubergine colored bodice top that has remnants of bright garnet colored lace, also beginning to shatter. Though her silks are shattering as they so often do, the antique cream lace overlap helps to soften the look of the skirt and the jacket still displays nicely. The photos show the two layers of petticoat, one atop the other as they were very properly worn. The chemise has matching broderie anglaise whitework to the pantaloons, which can be seen in the photo showing the made-on leather boots. If one is a total purest, the antique cream lace overlay is easily removed. One might also keep her dressed only in her beautiful broderie anglaise whitework garments, during the hot summer months and retain her silks for winter display!
Condition: The Kestner china shoulderhead is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. The leather limbs are also in very good condition. In the photo, a sleeve covers part of her hand- but the hand is all there as is he arm- this is true on both! Her cloth body is original and does not show signs of leakage.
Her molded hair style with its all over head of short curls and molded bow above the center brow has long been called Dolley Madison by collectors, thought the head was made after her death and the resemblance to Dolley Madison is not noteworthy. Albeit so, this Dolley Madison is a gorgeous antique china doll with a most pleasing countenance, all original clothing, exceptional undergarments and ready to be placed as a graceful addition to your collection.
