Vintage Powder Compact Hollywood Regency Blue Lucite Effect with Faux Pearl and Citrine Embellishment 1960s
This sale is for a vintage powder compact, part of a large batch of new/old stock dating from the 1960s. I regard it as Hollywood Regency style because it oozes all the glamour and glitz of the great screen goddesses.
These are wonderful collectible items typical of the Med Men era in more or less mint unused condition. Excellent for adding to a collection of vintage vanity items, for display or use.
This vintage piece came from a manufacturer's warehouse where they have been in storage for many years. These pieces are unused, never having been on the market. They were sample pieces and date in style from the 1960's or before. However there are no manufacturing labels, identifying marks or anything I could find on the individual pieces.
CONDITION: unused but may have minor scratches on the bottom from being in storage.
DATE: 1950s to 1960s
SIZE: Measures 2½ x 3 ins (5.5 x 7.5 cms)
These beautiful vintage vanity items are decorated by a Lucite technique with a swirled mother of pearl effect.
The base material of the compact is brass. The lid is brass and has a Lucite cover in blue greyish blue swirled mother of pearl effect. Set diagonally across the cover is a band of silvertone metalwork formed as leaves with scalloped edges. This is further embellished with spherical faux pearls and large faceted faux citrine.
Inside the lid is a mirror. The hinge is not loose and works well. The closure snaps shut and works well. There is no powder puff or sifter. Measures 2 x 3 ins (5 x 7.5 cms)
The final picture shows a vintage Mad Men Era advertisement for beauty products or vanity items. Such ads were deliberately designed with an air of allure or romance, implying that women who used these products would be irresistible to men.
Lucite is a diverse material, appearing in many forms, colours and styles in jewelry and personal items from the 1940's on, although it was most popular during the '40's and '50's. It is an acrylic resin, and a type of thermoset plastic. This is a broad-based term referring to any plastic that, once heated and formed, cannot be melted down and reformed. Although clear in its original state Lucite can be tinted virtually any colour, in ranges from transparent to opaque, with a number of interesting variations. One of these is the beautiful swirled mother of pearl effect which appears in this delightful vanity piece.
