This is a pretty matched pair of vintage mid 20th century Mexican side combs.
They have a brass heading riveted onto a commercial comb mount. This is inlaid with a mosaic of mother of pearl and abalone shell set into a brass frame. The design is a conventional one in which two parrots confront one another. One bird is inlaid with abalone and the other with mother of pearl.
There is a lively trade in inexpensive hair combs and barrettes made from alpaca or brass. Typically small side combs are made with a metal mounting secured by rivets to a commercial plastic comb mount made in the USA or elsewhere. These comb headings comb in various designs, typically flowers, birds and butterflies. The designs are beautifully worked by hand and involve inlaying small pieces of abalone shell and mother of pearl into a mosaic. Often these designs also incorporate coloured enamels or gold tone and silver tone metal to emphasize the motifs.
