Vintage Folding Hair Comb and First Aid Kit Mother of Pearl Lucite 1960s
This sale is for a vintage folding comb, part of a large batch of new/old stock dating from the 1960s. I regard it as Hollywood Regency style because it oozes all the glamour and glitz of the great screen goddesses.
These are wonderful collectible items typical of the Med Men era in more or less mint unused condition. Excellent for adding to a collection of vintage vanity items, for display or use.
This vintage piece came from a manufacturer's warehouse where they have been in storage for many years. These pieces are unused, never having been on the market. They were sample pieces and date in style from the 1960's or before. However there are no manufacturing labels, identifying marks or anything I could find on the individual pieces.
CONDITION: unused but may have minor scratches on the bottom from being in storage.
DATE: 1950s to 1960s
DESCRIPTION:
#1 is a folding comb. This beautiful vintage vanity item is made of plastic with a brass cover. The cover is decorated by a Lucite technique which resembles swirled mother of pearl effect. Measures 4 ins (10 cms) closed and 7¾ (19 cms) opened.
#2 is a small brass box with a mother of pearl effect cover. Inside is a plastic lining divided into two compartments which contain a small pair of tweezers. It could have been intended to hold a sewing kit or pills. It measures 1½ x 1½ ins (4 x 4 cms).
The final picture shows a vintage Mad Men Era advertisement for beauty products or vanity items. Such ads were deliberately designed with an air of allure or romance, implying that women who used these products would be irresistible to men.
FURTHER INFORMATION:
Lucite is a diverse material, appearing in many forms, colours and styles in jewelry and personal items from the 1940's on, although it was most popular during the '40's and '50's. It is an acrylic resin, and a type of thermoset plastic. This is a broad-based term referring to any plastic that, once heated and formed, cannot be melted down and reformed.
Although clear in its original state Lucite can be tinted virtually any colour, in ranges from transparent to opaque, with a number of interesting variations. One of these is the beautiful swirled pearlised effect which we see here.
