Classic Staffordshire. Extremely popular in the Victorian era, highly collectible, they are extremely scarce these days.
This is a fine example. The hen has a split tail and she sits on a grass filled painted basket. The bird's head was hand painted with black, red and pink and the eyes are yellow. Brown basket. The green grass is unusual for this type of figurine.
Probably made sometime around 1850 and in England. No marks but there is an old, partial antique shop label on the inside (doesn't give any info).
Measures about 7 inches x 9 1/4 inches and sits approximately 7 7/8 inches high. Some paint wear as you can see and there is a light pot stone radiation on the inside of the basket.
A memorable and certain to be cherished gift.
