A classic pewter inkwell. This is an excellent example. It was made from spun pewter and has openings for five quill pens.
The lid opens for a well insert (missing but easily replaced). Early 19th Century, probably American but no marks so I can't say for certainty where it was made.
Measures about 7 inches across and stands around 2 3/8 inches high. Pewter has darkened as it should, dusty, some traces of dried ink around opening, some scratches on the bottom.
