Welcome to Mama Jo's House of Dolls where every doll comes with a surprise!
According to the gift tag, wax doll maker Gladys MacDowell (my great aunt) and her sister doll costumer Florence Dole (Mama Jo's mother) gave this fabulous Marilyn Monroe World Doll to Mama Jo for Christmas in 1983, the year she came on the market. They had an exceptional eye for details. Though there were many Marilyns made by World Doll, each one looks a little different and this is one of the sexiest and most realistic. Also in the box was a red marabou accessory with a big ruby-like gem at its center that I haven't seen on any other one. Gladys, Florence or my mother may have found it and thought it "went" with MM. I taped it to her for her photo shoot so we both could see how it looks. Sensational!
She's 19" on her custom-made stand, 18" off it, and made of plastic with a soft vinyl head. She sports a glamorous white marabou wrap and clingy fire engine red gown. The stand base is made to look like marble and is quite sturdy but not too heavy. I took a photo of her in bright sunlight so you could see her true coloring. She looks a little green in the gills under strong artificial studio lights. Her face and arms are actually extremely pale giving her an ethereal appearance to the naked eye. There are some rosy patches on her arms that could be intentional since they're not touching her gown but maybe not. Her hair is nice and full; a little tousled, like she just rolled out of bed -- the way we love our Marilyn! There's a tiny factory flaw over her left eyelid. All versions of this doll have the same problem: green marks on her neck from her "diamond" necklace if the plastic was removed. Her plastic was and is included in the box along with her tag, certificate, hairnet, and other items you can see in the photo. The plastic that goes over her head is also in the box (but not in the photo). The box itself is in great shape. The thin plastic cover has come loose at the bottom and can easily be taped or glued down. I'll gladly do it with your permission. There are no holes or tears in it.
In true Marilyn fashion she's going commando. I know someone who photographed her once in a dress similar to this one and said it was obvious she wasn't wearing panties.
A delicious, fun splurge for yourself or a delightful gift for the Monroe lover on your gift list! She so wants to sing "Santa baby" to him or her.
