Welcome to Mama Jo's House of Dolls where every doll comes with a surprise!
These exceptional linden wood fully-jointed dolls I believe are from the village of Brienz - gateway to the Bernese Oberland and center of the Swiss woodcarving - and made by Paul Thomann or his father Adolf. They are marked: 500/5 (boy) 500 1/2 /4 (girl)
The girl is 8" tall and the boy 6". They are jointed at the head, shoulders, hips, and the girl at the knees as well. They've been in my family a very long time and have been well loved and admired since at least the early 1960s, the earliest date I've been able to find a photo of them. They were favorites of mine as a child and still are. I always wanted to travel to Switzerland and have yet to scratch it off my ever-growing bucket list.
"Luca" is perfect - his clothes as well as his body and face. His brown heavy pants have an eye hook in the back for his belt. His heavy cotton shirt has some overall aging but nothing significant. His eyes are a beautiful hand-painted blue. Oh! He's adorable. His sister "Ambra" looks like a wise soul, compassionate and in full charge of her little brother. I can imagine him playing tricks on her to loosen her up a bit. She has beautifully carved braids on either side of her head. Her hand-painted eyes are brown. She has several layers of clothing: bloomers, long-sleeve blouse that comes to her knees and has lace trim around the neck, a half slip, blue skirt and multi-colored striped apron that has eye-hooks at the shoulder and comes around in back. A big blue bow accents the back. She also has black felt shoes that tie and socks. She has a faint sweet odor if you put your face right up to her wooden head or hands. The boy doesn't have it. There's a little fading of her skirt in the back, her left shoe has a tiny split, and there's a little bit of aging on her blouse, mainly on her right sleeve.
Two beautiful examples of this superb craftsmanship that collectors the world over admire! Vintage stands will be included if you like. If you only want one doll, please email me your offer.
