Jumeau Crier 20 inch French Depose Tete Jumeau Bebe 1889, Original Shoes, Fabulous Antique Outfit

Welcome to Mama Jo's House of Dolls ... where every doll comes with a surprise!

May I present the crown jewel in Mama Jo's collection: an antique French 20" Jumeau Depose Tete Jumeau Bebe S.G.D.G. 9 with red hatch mark from 1889, the "Golden Age" of Jumeaus. She's in exceptionally good condition. The labels on her back are perfect, too. She is pure incandescence that draws immediate attention followed by oohs, aahs, and oh-la-las!

Before Richard Wright (doll expert often seen on the Antiques Roadshow) sadly passed away, we spoke on the phone about this doll. He confirmed this one's year of birth from her stamp. He was going to make a visit to the South to see my mother's collection. He would have swooned over "Alicia." That's the name that was on a small piece of paper tucked inside her absolutely stunning outfit. How often do you see a Jumeau in sleek, smart black velvet and silk? It elegantly shows off her perfect bisque face and amazing Prussian blue hand blown, spiral-threaded, set, paperweight glass eyes. She has a double-string crier that no longer works. Her hat is not your typical Jumeau frilly bonnet. It's made of real straw and adds to her stand out quality.

The champagne pink ruffles on her silk dress match those on the back of her black velvet jacket that has ten rosy red accent buttons. The dress is very delicate and melting in places, a common sign of silk aging. It cannot be seen with her jacket on. Do handle with care. The ensemble is handmade from the era and appropriate. Her darling brown leather shoes with russet moire bows are original, have a little wear in front but are in great shape and button fine. Her fishnet seamed black stockings have no tears. Rubber bands hold them in place. Her earrings are a pale pink with white accents. Her left earring is missing one of the tiny white beads and there's an itsy bitsy flake where the earring goes through her ear. The sleeves are ruffled and hide some flaws on her right hand.

Her antique undies are in beautiful shape with no signs of aging and are probably from the factory. They include a full slip with a pretty blue bow and tiny white buttons hidden at the shoulders, a half-slip tied with a string through two horizontal holes (there's a vertical hole on the opposite side of the waistband), and pantaloons that don't quite close around her little tummy and round derriere that were being held together by a string as well. For the moment she's going commando. I've removed her half-slip and pantaloons to give her dress more room and reduce further melting. It was a tight squeeze before with both of the strings tied.

She has a bisque socket head that has been black-lighted and shows no observable repaint or hairlines. Flawless! Her original pate is cork and her original mohair pale blonde wig is glued tightly to it. I will remove the pate to ship her. Her sweet closed lips and abundant painted eyelashes are perfect. There's some residual glue on her forehead that can be removed. Not being an expert at that, I'd rather not touch it.

Her French composition jointed body is in excellent shape with just two obvious flaws on her right hand and some light chipping near her left wrist. For a Jumeau, that's minimal. She has jointed wrists. I have many, many photos of this doll. If you'd like to see more, or individual photos of the ones grouped together, please ask. Alicia is a stunner!
