1908 Spoons Valentine - Cupids, Hearts, Artist Ernest Nister
This pretty Valentine postcard is postmarked 1908 and is very good condition. The artwork by Ernest Nister features hearts, cupids, and a pair of spoons - a symbol of courtship even way back then. At that time it was more closely linked to the symbolic "spoons" as shown on this card, but still carried some hint of the nestling of two bodies, as the term implies in today's culture. This card is published by E.P. Dutton of New York, but was printed in Saxony.
The sentiment is as follows: To my Sweet Love
My heart is stirred, sweet Valentine, By love both deep and true, Oh tell me then that you are mine, For I am 'spoons' on you.
The front is very clean, as are the edges and corners. The back contains only and address and postmark. The stamp has been removed, leaving traces of glue but no tears.
