We are pleased to offer for your consideration one of the most magnificent pieces of miniature furniture we have ever seen. We believe it to be a period piece in walnut from England. It has a label that reads, "John Barker & Co., Ltd., Depository, Cromwell Crescent, W", who most probably was the maker. It has the most beautiful workmanship exemplified by the wonderful flamed finish, the tooled leather inset on the desktop, and all the marquetry inlay on all the drawers and doors.
This piece comes in two parts. Both the top and the bottom each have a lock, which is very typical of British pieces; however, there are no keys included. The upper part with a crown molded bonnet has two mirrored doors, which are also outlined in marquetry and open to four shelves. The size of the top is 11" wide X 4" deep X 13" high.
The base piece has a slant front which opens to reveal four drawers, each with beautiful marquetry inlay and brass knobs. The bottom set of drawers protrude out further than the top set. The desk top has a tooled leather inset and a brass lock. The height of the desk surface when open is 9", which is a perfect scale for the French Fashion doll that we are displaying with the desk; however, the doll and accessories are not available for sale at this time. There are three drawers beneath the desk top and the base is raised on bracket feet with a scalloped apron. The approximate measurements of the base are: 12" wide X 8" deep X 13" high.
The overall height of the secretary is 27". When shipping, it may be most economical and safe to ship each piece in a separate box.
