Postcard Campbell Art Co. Evelyn Nesbit The Debutante Undivided marked copyright 1898 c. 1901-1907

A gorgeous Edwardian woman (Evelyn Nesbit) graces the front of this undivided postcard, with her long curly tresses and red flowers in her hair. This card is very delicately colored. The front includes the marks "The Debutante" and words that are difficult to read even with magnification but appear to be "Copyright 1898" and "The Alf Campbell Art Co." On the back are the words "Authorized by Act of Congress of May 19, 1898". May 19, 1898 was the date that Congress gave private printers permission to print and sell postcards. On December 24, 1901 permission was given to use the words "Postcard" on the back. This card has that word. The card therefore dates from the "Undivided Back Era" from 1901 – 1907, making this card over 100 years old! There is space for a stamp marked Domestic 1 cent and Foreign 2 cents. This postcard is really in incredibly good condition with only mild wear around the edges and is absolutely lovely! It would be great as a decorator piece, framed and displayed in a powder room.

Notes: Alfred S. Campbell (1840-1912) was a photographer and entrepreneur who worked in England and came to the U.S. in 1866. He started the Alfred S. Campbell Art Co in Elizabeth, NJ. In 1892 the company employed 300 people distributing postcards, stereoviews, calendars, cards and prints. The company specialized in theatrical photography and portraiture with photos of the stars in the fashionable dress of the times. Reportedly, some of Campbell's work can be seen in the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. The model for this card is Evelyn Nesbit (1884-1967), a popular chorus girl and artist's model in the late 1800s - early 1900s. Ms Nesbit posed for Prudential Life, Swift and Coca Cola, creating consumer demand for a variety of products.
