A fantastic piece of signed Rene Lalique opalescent French art glass-"Poissons" a coupe-plate (large shallow centerpiece bowl) the motif consisting of a group of fishes swimming in a circle around bubbles-all in incredible 3-D. Lalique very cleverly nearly hid the raised and moulded "R. Lalique" signature in this group of bubbles-it is there-just difficult to see. This piece measures an impressive 11 1/2" in diameter, and is 2" in depth. This particular piece has such strong opalescence it's an absolute show stopper; to illustrate this, most of our photos of this piece-both front and back- were taken on black. This popular pattern debuted in 1931, and can be seen in Marcilhac, page 758. The coupe-plate seems to be less available than the bowl-either way, these sardines make a big splash wherever they go. R. Lalique signature was impossible to capture-you can, however, feel and see the raised, circular R LALIQUE signature on the bowl interior, at the very center of the bubbles.
Condition is excellent, with only a few scattered scratches and a slight amount of shelf wear to a few high points on the base-no chips, cracks or significant issues.
