Vintage Religious Symbols- hagiography with provenance. Hagiography refers to the biographies of saints and ecclesiastical leaders. Byzantine icons are sacred paintings(icons, frescoes and mosaics) of Jesus Christ, of the Most Holy Mother of God, and of the Angels and Saints. 'Byzantine' refers to the Byzantine Empire where icons became an integral part of the Orthodox Faith. Characterized by vivid colors and often gold colored backgrounds, the persons depicted in icons seem to float and often are longer than their natural counterparts. This icon is of the Greek Orthodox Holiest mother with a child. It is made of pure 925 degrees silver, combined with oil painting on board. Came from Greece in late 80's. It measures 6 1/8"x 5 1/8"x 5/8". Weighs 239.5 grams On the back side there is provenance:
