Match Holder with Striker Wall Style Cane Pattern
There is minimal roughness around the hole for the wall hanger on this piece. Otherwise, there are no chips or cracks. The piece has been black light tests and fluoresces under the UV. This piece is in very good condition with no chips or cracks.
The Cane pattern was made by Gillinder & Sons, and McKee Brothers by numerous authors. (Jenks & Luna p. 105; McCain p. 176-177, Plate 82.) The pattern features flat hobnail buttons and a criss-cross weave.
Sanford & Sanford in Victorian Novelties comment on p. 26 Gillinder & Sons "advertisements are filled with novelties...seemed to thrive on the unusual...hanging vases, match safes, burnt match holders..." McKee novelties are featured on pages 30-37; however, the McKee novelties include hats and commemorative plates as well as a couple of candy containers.
On page 188 of the Sandford book, there is a photo of this particular piece featured in vaseline glass; however, they do not attribute the piece to a specific maker.
