American Impressionist Lake and Cottage oil painting by Joseph Newman

This is an American Impressionist landscape oil painting of a lakeside scene overlooking the lake and the far shore with houses on the distant shore and a low mountain rising above. The scene was sold at major auction 7 years ago as a scene of Lake Otsego, Cooperstown, New York. The mountain in the background is Mount Wellington also known as Sleeping Lion Mountain. The painting is a fine example of American Impressionism from the 1920's and 1930's. It features broken brush work and relies solely on color to create contrasts of light and dark. Newman's palette in this picture was very pure and leaned heavily to various blues and purples. His perspective is excellent with trees, a fence and a cottage in the foreground establishing the vista that finishes with the mountain and sky in the background. It is an oil on canvas laid to bristol board (an early type of composition board) by the artist at the time of the painting. It is signed "J. Newman" in the lower right. It is in a hand carved and hand leafed frame.

Joseph Newman was born in 1890. He studied at the Pratt Institute of Art, in Paris, France and with Louis Comfort Tiffany. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Rockport Art Association, the Tiffany Fund, etc. He exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the 1920's, the Salons of America in the 1920' and 1930's, the Society of Independent Artists, the Salmagundi Club (he won a prize in 1945), etc. His work is held by: the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum and the Tiffany Fund.

Measurements are: painting, 11 3/4 inches x 15 5/8 inches; exterior of frame, 18 1/2 inches x 22 1/2 inches.

Condition is excellent with no in paint.
