This is a vintage photogravure of a knight in armor kneeling in worshipful prayer and surrounded by an extensive landscape. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th Century and is hand colored with watercolors and further accented with gilding. The coloring and decoration is old. The process that was used was very popular during the 1890's and into the first decade of the 20th Century. The gravure was printed on paper in black and white, then bleached out in preparation for coloring by hand.
This gravure is matted and framed in a late 19th or early 20th century frame. The matting and backing are new to preserve the gravure. We kept the old wooden backing and original glass that came with the frame (it is behind the modern materials and does not some in contact with the gravure.) We did this to keep the wonderful period style of the presentation. This also is a very nice package since the cream and gilt finish of the frame complements the soft colors used on the gravure.
Condition of the gravure is excellent. The Frame has minor warping and some insignificant repairs.
Measurements are: gravure, 7 5/8 inches x 7 inches; frame, outer dimensions, 15 5/8 inches x 15 inches.
For anyone interested in Gothic or Renaissance revival decoration this picture is a perfect complement. It also has interest for anyone who likes the pre-Raphaelite movement and the Old Master style in art.
