In many countries a red poppy is a symbol of remembrance and loss, but there is something equally charming about this black rose. Not existing in nature, it is a fantasy carved out of the darkness. Its beautiful, three-dimensional petals gracefully unfold in the timeless repeating pattern of a rose. Hand-carved out of Whitby jet, the piece is deceptively light for such a detailed, intricately carved piece. This also, incidentally, makes it easy to wear. Versatile, able to go from blouse to coat to hat to anything else you can think of.
Condition: Good antique condition. There are some small flea bites along the outer edges, at might be expected from a piece this age, as well as a flake off one of the second layer petals. There might be a fine surface scratch here or there when viewed under a loupe, but that’s it so far as I can tell. Due to the very nature of jet, how the piece is carved, the many edges, angles, reflections, etc. the small damages I have mentioned are, in person, only noticeable upon close examination and are more visible in the photographs. Original c-clasp and fittings on back, the pin can be a bit stiff, but works very well and is secure. Measures 1 ¼” across and is 5/8” at its thickest.
