Beautiful carved vulcanite locket. Vulcanite was an early form of hard rubber, and was usually molded into pieces and the leeches from black to brown over the last century. Not this piece! The color is a rich, deep black and has a carving of some sort of fruit and leaves on it (maybe pomegranate or apple). Inside is a gorgeous, intricate engraved design, a really unexpected and gorgeous touch in a vulcanite piece. While vulcanite, jet, and other black pieces were usually used for mourning, they were also popular simply as fashion pieces, in the same way a black dress today could be used for a funeral, but the little black dress is a universal staple in every women's wardrobe.
Condition: Excellent antique condition, barely visible surface scratches. Measures 1 3/8" long, with bale, by 1 1/8" wide, and just under ¾" deep.
