The backstamp dates this lovely Alfred Meakin square butter pat or butter chip dish to a narrow period from1891-1896. Before 1891 the word "ENGLAND" was not used; in 1897 "LTD" was added. The unembellished design on this antique transferware dish includes stems, large leaves and small blue and dark pink flowers. It is square with rounded, fluted corners and a thin gold trim at the rim. It is in fine condition commensurate with use and age, with some even crazing and a small bit of wear to part of the gold trim. There are no chips or cracks. This piece measures 5-5/8" at the rim and 1-3/4" across the base, and it weighs 1.4 ounces.
