James FENTON Sterling spoon THISTLE Birmingham 1928
James Fenton worked primarily in Birmingham, England, and was a renowned thimble and jewelry maker. The diminutive souvenir-type spoon offered here is smaller than demitasse measuring about 3½ inches and with a very thin stick handle. The marks appear on the bowl verso and are quite clear; "J.F", "Lion", "Anchor" for Birmingham, "D" date mark for 1928. By my scale, the spoon weighs just 4 grams (0.1287 ounces troy). Clearly the value of this 84-year-old piece lies not in its melt value. The full figural finial is of a thistle with a delicate chased design. I have used a jeweler's cloth just enough to reveal the marks and thistle detail but have not removed the remaining tarnish, as you can see in the photographs. It is in excellent condition.
