Two Antique Gorham small hollow handled knives STERLING circa 1848

Gorham used the trademark "Lion/Anchor/G" since the 1840s. We can date these two sterling knives to a brief period from 1848 to 1865 when the lion faced left rather than right. (Rainwater, "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers," ©1975.) They are marked as such on the blades, and are also monogrammed on the blades near the hilt. The handles are rather dented and the finial on one has been pushed down a bit.

The knives are 2.2 ounces total weight and measure about 6½ inches. These are nice examples of that short window when Gorham used an old mark, and having two survive together through the years is a treat. Please examine the photos for your own assessment of the little bumps and dings.
