NC Pottery, C C Cole Tourist Pottery Ashtray/Planter. This piece stands 3" high and is about 6" across, with a depth of 2 1/2". The glaze is primarily pink-rose with several color drips in green, dark rose, and yellow. It is quite pretty. It is in great condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or repair. This was originally made as an ashtray but it would hold bulbs, particularly something like paperwhite narcissus beautifully.
C. C. Cole "tourist" pottery is the secret sin of many collectors and admirers of North Carolina art pottery. Often consigned to second-class status - - as if the great bulk of North Carolina pottery of the era wasn't sold to tourists - - this colorful and usually multi-colored pottery are works of artisanship in their own right.
C. C. Cole polychrome-glazed pieces first were dipped in a white body glaze; other colors were dribbled around the body; then the top was dipped in yet another color. The finished appearance of the multicolored glazes can vary greatly, depending on the degree of heat applied during the final burning of the ware. Part of the charm of C. C. Cole pottery is the seemingly-endless variety of colors and glaze melts available and no two are alike.
The great majority of C. C. Cole pieces are unmarked.
