Rare American Modernist Olaf Skoogfors Sterling Ox bone Landscape Pin Brooch

Today I am offering an incredibly rare sterling silver and ox bone brooch by the famed American Modernist Olaf Skoogfors. Mr. Skoogfors items rarely come up for sale, many of his pieces are in museums all over the world. You can see many of his pieces in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Smithsonian. He moved to American from Sweden when he was a child. In 1959, he established a studio in Philadelphia and taught at Philadelphia College of Art. He created jewelry and items that relayed his view of landscapes and forms of the human body. "I wanted to design with my hands, to make something I could see and hold. After Moving to Philadelphia, I found my most satisfactory outlet in the silver department at the Museum College of Art." (Craft Horizons, v. XXI, no. 1, pp. 23).

Olaf Skoogfors died at the young age of 45 years old in 1975. What is interesting about this piece is that it is dated. The reverse clearly reads "OLAF SKOOGFORS STERLING 1977 XX-50". From the research I have done on this piece, it is most likely a commissioned piece to a jeweler after Olaf Skoogfors died by the Skoogfors estate.

This is a solid piece, the likes of Sam Kramer, Ed Wiener, and Art Smith all come to mind when handling a piece like this. It is a large piece as well, measures 1 3/4 inches wide and 2 inches at the tallest point.

Skoogfors pieces are sought after by the most advanced collectors and again are very difficult to come across. Please ask any questions you may have. I censored the serial number for both my safety and the safety of the new owner in the future.

Thank you so much for taking the time to view this pin, and again, please ask any and all questions you may have!
