This is a 1949 edition of Texas Hill Country ballads and poems by Carlos Ashley. The book has 63 pages and was published by The Steck Co. in Austin, Texas. Mr. Ashley was a 4th generation Texas rancher who lived from 1904 to 1993. He held many political positions during his life and was the Texas Poet Laureate from 1945-1951. He was an inspiration to two great cowboy poets, Baxter Black and Red Steagall. The book has 2 copyright dates of 1941 and 1949 but shops online list this book as a first edition. The binding is tight, and the pages are slightly yellowed. Along the spine and on part of the back cover are 2 lightened areas that are each 1.25 inches by 1/4 inches. I don't know if there was a dust cover but the book has a cardboard protective sleeve. The sleeve has color loss along its edges and has a price tag sized area that is missing color. The signature is in blue ink and looks original, although there is no COA.
