Vintage 1940's Occupied Japan Lacquerware Vase by Maruni
An interesting little vase that measures 6" tall and 2.5" wide (at widest point). What I find interesting is the Maruni backstamp...marked "Maruni" "Made by Hand in Occupied Japan" "Metal Base" "Lackerware" and numbered 57/58. The Maruni backstamp usually has a slightly different "Maruni" script, they are usually marked "patented" and the most obvious difference is the incorrect spelling of "lackerware" on this piece versus other pieces. As there is no patent marking, I believe that this vase may have been one of Maruni's initial "lackerware" pieces.
The burgundy color is rich and the gold detailing in perfect condition. The only flaw to the vase, is the wearing of the corner areas along the top edge. See last pic at left.
