Vintage Russian Folklore Lacquer Trinket Box from the renowned village of Palekh. Centuries of artistic tradition reside here, where the artists are known for their striking brilliant colors and attention to detail. Initially the Icon painters of earlier times, the artists turned to these lovely fairytale and folklore miniatures, after the fall of the Russian Empire in 1917.
The Firebird depicted here with Prince Ivan, tells the tale of a young prince finding the elusive Firebird in the magic forest. Their tail feathers, magical in their own right, give Prince Ivan the power he desires. Depending on the version that you choose, from Stravinsky's Ballet to the many authors that gave the story life, what happens from there varies....needless to say, the Firebird has kept storytellers very busy for centuries.
This box was purchased from the estate of a Russian couple and is in perfect condition with the original paperwork. I have loosely translated some of it. The third line from the top "nanexckoe" translates to Palekh, the following lines are a combination of "Subject Mural" "Art" and "Author". I am unable to make out the writing, other than the artist, H. Moceeba and 1965.
The box measures 2.8cm in height and 10.2cm (4") in diameter.
Thank you so much for stopping by and as always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
