Vintage Taxco, Mexico Sterling Silver Figural Orchid Brooch.
A beautiful little figural orchid brooch that measures 2.25" by 2.25" or 57mm by 57mm.
Late 1970's / Early 1980's
The clasp is a simple non locking "C" clasp (more of a hook, thank an actual clasp) however, the pin bar is very secure once it's placed beneath clasp. The attachment of a split ring, to the hinge end of the clasp, could turn the brooch into a pendant.
Hallmarks are: Taxco, Mexico, 925 and the alpha numeric mark T and what looks like and M by could be an H, O and another illegible number mark. There is an artist's mark within the Taxco, Mexico, 925 Circle Mark...but it is very difficult to make out. This mark appears to have been stamped twice on the same area, leaving it slightly blurry.
*The alpha numeric system is as follows: The first letter is the letter of the City of origin, the second letter is the first initial of the silversmith's last name, the following 2 numbers are the silversmith's placement on the assay office registry - for example a 01 would mean that person was the first person with the last name beginning with M (or whatever letter you may find on a piece after the T) to register with the assay office.*
Very good condition with an area of stubborn discoloration at the edge of leaf on the right side of the pin. As the brooch has a wonderful patina to it, this small discoloration is not overtly noticeable. I have however, priced it accordingly.
