Vintage 1847 Rogers Bros. ADORATION Silverplate Gravy Ladle

Vintage 1847 ROBERS BROS. silverplate gravy ladle in the Adoration pattern (c. 1930) in excellent condition with no dings, dents or silverplate wear. This vintage silverplate gravy ladle is in extremely good condition with many more decades of use.

Even though gravy ladles date to the Roman era and sterling silver flatware was first produced in Sheffield, England in the 1200's, sterling silver and silverplate ladles did not see widespread use until the mid-18th century, when a companion to the newly embraced- soup tureen was needed. A long, gooseneck-handled spoon with a working end big enough to efficiently fill a soup bowl was an obvious complement.

Like a lot of flatware of the day, sterling silver and silverplate ladles conformed to the prevailing style. Handles tended to feature the same sorts of shapes and designs as knives, forks, and spoons—from plain Old English to scalloped King's to handles with beaded borders, which were especially popular during the Victorian Era.

This vintage silverplate gravy ladle measures 6.5" in length, the bowl measures 2.25" x 2.125" and weighs 2.1 ounces. Touchmarked on the back of the handle with 1847 ROGERS BROS. and IS for International Silver.
