Lenci

Dating from the mid to late 1930s, is a very pretty, albeit unusual example from the Lenci firm. Details of this fourteen and one-half inch example with the classically lovely "Lucia face" include a pressed felt head that has been coated with layers of cellulose – an attempt by the company to introduce a washable doll. We understand the idea was not popular with consumers of the day, but if the dolls looked at all as beautiful as this one does, all these years later, what was the problem? The front of the doll's head resembles composition with gorgeous coloring, while the arms and legs are of a woven, flannel-like material which appears to be the standard felt in immediate outward appearance. The wonderful dress, of printed cotton with organdy components is decorated with pinked felt edges and ruched organdy ribbon trim. The general condition of the costume is very good, due to some fading to the front of the dress, and just a little bit of moth damage to the felt stripe that accents the hem. The classic felt shoes are in very clean, bright condition. This very unique doll represents just another chapter in the long story of the Lenci company – and we believe, a beautiful chapter, at that.
