Set of 5 19th Century Japanese Ko Kutani porcelain covered bowls with foo lions

A set of five extremely well-painted Japanese covered dishes with red and gilded gold foo lions flying above waves in pursuit of the pearl of wisdom.

The bowls have an off white glaze that is crackled. They are painted in overglaze red and overglaze gilt. A tour de force in painting with foo lions, waves, pearl of wisdom. Lines encircle the mouth and base. There is a design at the bottom of the bowl and the same design on the underside of the lid. The set was not intended for export as is a typical Japanese set of five. The entire bowl and lid are glazed except for the foot ring and the lid ring.

There is a character mark on the upper central lid.

MEASUREMENTS: 4" diameter at the widest point. Each bowl with lid is 2 ½" tall

CONDITION: The condition of the bowls is very good. Slight wear to the overglaze gilt and red designs. One lid has an inner chip (see photo) not noticeable from the outside. The overall look of the bowls is very good.

A beautiful set of well-painted and highly functional Japanese ceramic art.
