Set of Three Shallow Scalloped Japanese (Arita) Imari Bowls Meiji Period
Set of three lovely shallow matching Japanese Imari bowls with an elegant, slightly scalloped rim. Each dish has an intricate design of four cobalt flourishes complemented by peonies, prunus floral sprays and brocade panels, finely painted with underglaze cobalt blues, overglaze iron red enamel and gilded. Inside this design is a band that surrounds a central medallion of a very pretty stylized dragon. Along the rim is another band of alternating brocade designs.
The back of each dish has a floral band in blue underglaze and the foot ring is painted with two lines, also in blue. The base is glazed with a Fuki Choshun mark.(Kanji characters, meaning Wealth, Nobility, Longevity and Youth, also translated as 'Good fortune and long life')
Each bowl measures 6" diameter and is 1 1/8" deep and dates from the Meiji (1868-1912) period near Arita. (Also known as "Arita ware")
The condition is excellent with only slight gilding loss on the rim. There are no cracks or chips.
This is an exquisite set of three Imari/Arita ware bowls. The quality is outstanding
